Firefighters in the US state of New Jersey have been battling a huge fire that engulfed an apartment block in the city of Edgewater.

Flames and smoke could be seen across the Hudson River in New York City.

There were no initial reports of injuries in the blaze that broke out at around 16:30 local time (21:30 GMT), affecting about 400 residents.

Authorities said everyone in the four-storey building appears to have been able to get out safely but they have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
