愛因斯坦相信一種宇宙宗教感覺（cosmic religious feeling），但反對一個人格化的神。他曾說：未來的宗教將是一種宇宙宗教，而佛教包括了對於未來宇宙宗教所期待的特徵：它超越人格化的神，避免教條和神學，涵蓋自然和精神兩方面，它更是基於對所有自然界和精神界事物作為一個有意義整體的體驗而引發的宗教意識。佛教正符合了這個描述。如果有任何能夠應付現代科學需求的宗教，那必定是佛教。
